Clean up for potential Walmart property in LaBelle by Patty Brant Caloosa Belle (FL) June 19, 2014The LaBelle City Commission was visited by Justin Hoffmeier, environmental attorney representing Ben Moore, whose property on SR 80 west of town is likely to be the site of a Walmart one day. Mr. Hoffmeier told the commission that Mr. Moore has filed with the Department of Environmental Protection for the property to become a Brownfield site (a commercial or industrial area that is deemed to be contaminated), The site was previously a citrus grove, he said, cyanide is present in the dirt. The contaminant could also be naturally occurring from limestone. The water there is not contaminated, but nothing can be built on the property as it is. He added that Mr. Moore will probably need to haul off all the soil - a considerable expense. ...
