Study will evaluate soil safety near Corning East High School
Corning Inc. hires firm to test samples

A study will be conducted at Corning East High School and the nearby  
Houghton Plot neighborhood to see if contaminated soil is a problem  
there.

The environmental study in the northeast part of the city, announced  
Tuesday, will start next week and is expected to last all summer, the  
state Department of Environmental Conservation said.

The study area runs from Pyrex Street on the west, East Pulteney  
Street to the north, Post Creek to the east and the Chemung River to  
the south.

The study is being done because elevated levels of lead and other  
potential contaminants were found in fill excavated during expansion  
of Corning East High School, the DEC said.
