PCE removal systems installed By Bennet Goldstein Le Mars Daily Sentinel (IA) July 21, 2014LE MARS -- Environmental Protection Agency contractors have installed vapor mitigation systems in 19 Le Mars properties to remove probable cancer-causing air contaminants. The properties were identified by EPA staff as having unsafe levels of the chemicals tetrachloroethylene, PCE, or trichloroethylene, TCE, in the air. The vapor mitigation systems suck contaminated air from under a building and vent it into the air above where it will dissipate. The EPA previously detected an underground plume of PCE in downtown Le Mars, northwest of the Central Avenue and Plymouth Street intersection. The plume runs northwest about four blocks, terminating halfway between the post office and Clark Elementary School blocks. Installation of the air mitigation systems took about six weeks, said Susan Fisher, on-scene coordinator for the Le Mars PCE site. ...
