Environmental group and officials clash over Pompton Lakes cleanup By Leslie Scott Suburban Trends July 31, 2014Despite resistance from municipal officials, a local environmental group continues to push the Borough Council to support its position and oppose DuPont's request to modify the action levels of its contamination cleanup plan.
In 2013, DuPont requested a change in the action levels of the cleanup plan to be in line with the less stringent national levels.
This cleanup site, also called The Plume, was contaminated when DuPont operated a munitions factory in the borough for 92 years.
The local Citizens for a Clean Pompton Lakes (CCPL) is concerned that modifying the work plan would artificially minimize the public health risk, make it appear as if the contamination no longer exists, and cause DuPont to walk away from its responsibilities to clean The Plume.
