EPA unveils options for water wells

OLEAN - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced a series of options Tuesday to rid the Olean Well Field Superfund Site around Alcas Cutlery Corp. of decades-old industrial groundwater and soil contamination.

At a sparsely attended public hearing held at Jamestown Community College’s CUTCO Theater in Olean, EPA officials said traces of a cancer-causing industrial degreaser called trichloroethylene (TCE) discovered at the public tap water source in east Olean poses no immediate threat to human health. But they noted the TCE must go to meet state and federal environmental standards.

Much like the roughly 500 acres of brownfields in north Olean, environmental officials pointed more than 30 years ago to potential contamination from east Olean companies Alcas; AVX; the former McGraw Edison, now Cooper Power Systems; and the former Loohn’s Dry Cleaners. But unlike those brownfields, for which contamination continues to hinder industrial development, the east Olean environmental issues have largely been remedied.
