North Ridgeville, Avon Lake brownfield sites to be examined

NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio -- A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency  
$600,000 grant to make environmental assessments on 40 suspected  
contaminated brownfield sites in Lorain County could bring new life  
to unused areas and buildings in North Ridgeville and Avon Lake.

In some of the locations in the cities, the traditional idea of a  
brownfield does not apply.

The term is generally applied to fields where plant life has been  
killed off, likely because of contamination. The term though is  
broader, and includes  places that may not be contaminated. Sites  
need to be evaluated to determine if there is contamination, and if  
found, cleaned up.

When the area is deemed usable, the property can be redeveloped.

Regional EPA Administrator Susan Hedman said the county will use the  
grant to conduct 40 environmental assessments, devise four cleanup  
plans and pay for some of that work. The EPA has awarded 171 similar  
grants around the country this year.
