Hotel planned for brownfield

OLEAN - Some new economic life may be on the horizon for a long unused area of the city.

Members of the city’s Planning Board are scheduled to hear a presentation from Olean Gateway LLC on plans to construct a four-story, 60,000-square-foot hotel on a 60-acre property at 1404-1406 Buffalo St. The limited liability company is owned by Krog Corp., an Orchard Park-based engineering firm.

The 60-acre lot falls within the city’s brownfields - a 500-acre former industrial area abutting Interstate 86 in North Olean where contamination has impeded redevelopment.

According to a copy of Olean Gateway’s submission to the board, the company also intends to use the property for commercial and retail purposes. Details on future site use were limited. The Times Herald was unable to reach an Olean Gateway representative to comment on the plan.

Redevelopment of the brownfields has long been viewed as one of the keys toward reinvigorating the local economy.
