Clearing properties costly, worthwhile by Saul Hubbard Eugene Register-Guard (OR) January 25, 2015Contaminated and abandoned commercial properties, such as the former McAyeal’s lot, are common in Oregon. The sites, often referred to as brownfields, include former dry cleaning businesses, gas stations, mercury mines, factories and other industrial properties. A 2014 study by consultant ECONorthwest estimated there are 13,500 sites with known or suspected contamination in Oregon. …After looking at almost 100 completed brownfield cleanups in Oregon that were paid for with state money, the ECONorthwest study concluded that the overall economic benefits of the rehabilitations significantly outweighed their cost. ...
