Experts: Testing should have been done yearly at Lowrance, Hanes

School officials should consider installing pre-emptive vapor-mitigation systems at Hanes and Lowrance middle schools, air-pollution experts said Monday during a series of meetings with parents and school officials.

While chemicals in groundwater below the surface may be vaporizing and seeping into the schools, the experts did not recommend moving students before the end of the school year because, in their view, the short-term health risks posed by possible contaminants over the next few weeks or months is likely not high enough during that time frame to justify a disruption to their schedule.

“It’s quite possible that further sampling will show vapor intrusion is occurring,” said Lenny Siegel, the executive director of the Center for Public Environmental Oversight. “The data that I have seen suggests that, but it’s not at a level that North Carolina and U.S. EPA consider a significant risk to take action.
