School board votes to close Lowrance, Hanes middle schools by March 2 by Arika Herron and Bertrand M. Gutierrez Winston-Salem Journal (NC) February 10, 2015 The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education votes 7-2 to close Hanes and Lowrance middle schools by March 2. Voting in favor were school board members: Mark Johnson, Vic Johnson, Robert Barr and Deanna Taylor joined by Vice Chair Jeannie Metcalf and Chair Dana Caudill Jones. Voting against were school board members David Singletary and Elisabeth Motsinger. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education on Tuesday decided to move the students at Hanes and Lowrance middle schools by March 2. The vote, 7-2, marked a watershed moment after the board members contended for weeks with a legacy of toxic waste, poor oversight and what many view as a dearth of information concerning the contaminants under the campus. Board members Mark Johnson, Vic Johnson, Jeannie Metcalf, Dana Jones, Lori Clark, Robert Barr and Deanna Taylor voted in favor of the move. David Singletary and Elisabeth Motsinger opposed it.
