Whirlpool Says Revisions To Cleanup Plan ‘Premature’ By Chad Hunter Southwest Times Record (AR) February 26, 2015Whirlpool Corp. is asking the state to withdraw proposed revisions to a contamination cleanup plan that, in part, call for additional soil removal at the company’s closed Fort Smith plant. Working with the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality for more than a decade, Whirlpool was given the nod in December 2013 for a cleanup plan, called a Remedial Action Decision Document or RADD, to address trichloroethylene, a toxic substance known as TCE, in groundwater and soil at the plant, which closed in 2012. The state now is seeking changes to the plan that include additional, large- diameter soil borings and thermal desorption, a soil heating technique. According to Whirlpool, following the removal of soil and chemical treatment of groundwater in 2014, TCE concentrations decreased by more than 50 percent in some areas. ...
