Ogdensburg Kiwanis Club property latest to be considered for environmental cleanup By LARRY ROBINSON JOHNSON NEWSPAPERS (NY) APRIL 5, 2015 OGDENSBURG - City officials are working with the Ogdensburg Kiwanis Club to remediate contamination from a 5.8-acre plot of land the organization owns near the St. Lawrence River as part of the state’s Brownfield Cleanup Program. The Kiwanis property, now vacant, is on the north side of Riverside Avenue near the former Augsbury oil tank farm and has seen wide-ranging use as an industrial and commercial site since the 1890s. Past uses have included a lumber yard, coal yard, sash and blind factory and bulk oil storage lot, according to officials. Ogdensburg Planning and Development Director Andrea L. Smith said although the city has been working with property owners at or near the former Augsbury site for several years to determine the extent of contamination in the area, the Kiwanis Club only recently submitted an application seeking inclusion in the state’s Brownfield Cleanup Program. The goal of the program is to aid voluntary private-sector cleanups of brownfields and to reduce development pressure on other so-called “greenfield” locations, according to Ms. Smith. … For the entire article, see http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/news05/ogdensburg-kiwanis-club-property-latest-to-be-considered-for-environmental-cleanup-20150405 -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
