Hillside site cleanup continues in Needham By Jonathan Dame Needham Times (MA) April 13. 2015A Needham company responsible for the underground contamination of land near Hillside Elementary School will take action directly on the school site for the first time this summer. Contamination levels on the school site itself have remained relatively constant over the last 15 years, and recent testing has shown the area of sustained contamination to be wider than previously suspected. Luke Legere, special counsel for the town, described the location as “that one remaining area where contamination remains high” when meeting with selectmen last month. Microwave Development Laboratories has been involved in mitigation efforts since the contamination - consisting primarily of trichloroethene, or TCE - was discovered in 1985, but so far direct interventions have been focused uphill and downhill from the school site. ...
