Evanite cleanup entering new phase by BENNETT HALL Corvallis Gazette-Times (OR) May 28, 2015After close to a quarter-century of work, the cleanup of a highly contaminated South Corvallis industrial site might be entering its final phase. State environmental regulators are gathering public comment on a proposal to incorporate several new methods into the ongoing removal of trichloroethylene, better known as TCE, from soil and groundwater at the former Evanite Fiber plant at 1115 S.E. Crystal Lake Drive. The property was purchased in 1996 by Massachusetts-based Hollingsworth & Vose, which uses the plant to produce high-end glass fiber for specialty filtration applications. But for about 20 years before that, from 1975 to 1996, Evanite used part of the site to manufacture plastic battery separator material using a process involving large amounts of TCE, a widely used and highly toxic industrial solvent. ...
