Hidden value By Jenny Gray Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald (VA) June 9, 2015The idea that brownfields - properties with suspected or real environmental problems - might be seen in a positive light was presented to a group of governmental and community leaders Monday. "People from New Belgium (Brewing Company) said that was their number one site criteria - that it had to be a brownfields property," said Cathy Scott, executive director of the Halifax County Economic Development Commission, of the craft brewing company. "A lot of companies are having brownfield properties approved by the State, which can bring about meaningful development." A presentation about brownfields and their impact was presented by Ron Townley, planning and services director with the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments, at the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau in Roanoke Rapids. Around the table were mayors Julia Meacham of Weldon and Emery Doughtie of Roanoke Rapids; Halifax County Commissioners Vernon Bryant and J. Rives Manning Jr.; real estate brokers and others who wanted to hear from Townley about a new grant received by his organization. ...
