SOUTH WHITTIER >> Construction of the new California High School football stadium will be delayed several weeks to allow for the removal of about 730 cubic yards of soil, including high amounts of arsenic.

The removal of the soil containing the arsenic, which was found near the northern bleachers and running track, is scheduled through June 19.

Valerie Martinez, spokesman for the Whittier Union High School District, said it’s not unusual to find contaminants like this.

“When you do a new project, testing is done and what they found was arsenic in the soil,” Martinez said. “It’s a couple of feet down. But in order to move forward, they need to remediate it. It’s our understanding there are no health risks.”
