Soil at new Murray campus contaminated with pesticides

The Ridgecrest Planning Commission will be discussing the proposed construction of a new Murray Middle School at 200 E. Drummond Ave on a vacant 47-acre site. The project would essentially relocate Murray from its current location, but would first require the removal of soil contaminated by pesticide use at part of  the new location.

According to the agenda and staff report, the project would involve leasing a 47-acre property at 200 E. Drummond Ave. The new school would be constructed on 31 acres. Existing school facilities would be demolished and existing Murray Middle School programs relocated to the new location. “With the exception of the school's start time, which is proposed at 8:05 AM, the new program would follow the same operational schedule as the existing school,” according to the report.

“However, prior to the construction of the new school, the District will remove 20,077 cubic yards of soil contaminated by [pesticide use] in the general area of former base houses in the northern portion of the site. The soil removal is addressed in a Removal Action Workplan and will be completed under the oversight of the Department of Toxic Substances Control,” according to the report.
