CTS cleanup plans under EPA review by Tonya Maxwell Asheville Citizen-Times (NC) August 7, 2015 ASHEVILLE – To clean up its Superfund site, CTS is proposing heating the underground pollution with electrodes, a method that would cause dangerous compounds to vaporize, allowing the contaminants to be collected in wells. The $4 million plan would take an estimated 19 months to complete, according to work plans drafted by a CTS contractor and submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency. The plans were given to the EPA on July 31, the deadline for completing the proposal. That submission triggers a process that calls on the federal agency to comment on the feasibility of the method. Officials can make suggestions or corrections to the work plan or reject the method completely. Known as electrical resistivity heating, the plan CTS is advocating has been used for decades and relies on electrical current run though electrodes that have been bored underground. The current would heat subsurface water, vaporizing the chemical degreaser trichloroethylene, also known as TCE. … For the entire article, see http://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2015/08/07/cts-cleanup-plans-epa-review/31309125/ -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
