Contaminated and Abandoned Carter Carburetor Factory Is Finally Heading to Demolition by Phillip Thomas Hot Rod August 31, 2015 The beleaguered Carter Carburetor factory has become a huge mess for the City of St. Louis after closing its doors in the years where carburetion fell beneath electronic fuel-injection in production cars. When the factory closed in 1985, the owners of Carter Carburetor, American Car and Foundry, ceded the property to the City of S. Louis. The St. Louis Post is reporting that the EPA will begin tearing down the factory this week as a part of a massive Superfund cleanup project. Unfortunately, the remnants of the nearly decade-old factory are heavily contaminated with the byproducts of carburetor production, most notably the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), trichloroethylene (TCE), and asbestos. According to the EPA, approximately 480,000 square-feet of warehouse space have been dangerously contaminated. This has led to the EPA classifying the 10-acre Carter Carburetor site a Superfund project, the federal government’s program to clean up the nation’s most dangerous hazardous waste sites. The list of cleanup sites under the Superfund program include vacated ammunition plants, industrial coating and plating sites, chemical treatment plants, asbestos mines, and waste disposal plants—to name a few. … For the entire article, see http://www.hotrod.com/news/1508-contaminated-and-abandoned-carter-carburetor-factory-is-finally-heading-to-demolition/ -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
