County seeks environmental agreement

MURFREESBORO — County leaders plan to enter into a brownfield agreement with the state concerning contaminated groundwater before buying land on Florence Road for a Solid Waste Department office.

The Rutherford County Commission appropriated $1.25 million in May for the possible purchase of the property across the street from Murfreesboro's Solid Waste Department office near Northwest Broad Street. The proposed 22.5-acre purchase also would provide space for a fueling center and repair shop for county trucks.

The brownfield agreement would protect the county from any lawsuits or fines from federal or state regulators for the contaminated groundwater, advising attorney Jeff Reed told members of the County Commission Property Management Committee last week. The agreement also would require putting down a vinyl membrane barrier below any proposed building and not digging a well for drinking water, he added.
