21 Charlton homes near Southbridge landfill test positive for toxin By Debbie LaPlaca Worcester Telegram (MA) November 3. 2015 CHARLTON – Casella Waste Systems reported Tuesday that 21 residential wells near the Southbridge landfill have tested positive for a toxic chemical, four at levels that exceed drinking water standards. A professional geologist, working as a consultant for Casella, said the science points away from the landfill being responsible. Health board members have repeatedly made clear they oppose a Casella Waste Systems plan to expand the Southbridge landfill into Charlton, saying it was only a matter of time until the landfill contaminated nearby residential wells. On Friday, Casella informed the board that recent testing revealed three home wells on H Foote Road are contaminated with an excessive level of probable human carcinogen 1,4-dioxane.
