Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] TCE in the groundwater in Warwick and Northampton, Pennsylvania |
Residents pleased with DEP solution to well water contamination By Kyle Bagenstose The Intelligencer (PA) November 17, 2015 The source of the problem is still in question. But the solution looks like it's just about a done deal. That was the vibe in the Warwick municipal building Tuesday night, after a few dozen residents of Warwick and Northampton heard proposals from the state Department of Environmental Protection on how the agency would deal with high levels of toxic chemicals found in well water. The DEP detected unsafe levels of the chemical trichloroethylene, an industrial degreaser known to cause short and long-term health effects, along the lower end of the township's border in spring 2011. Since then, the agency has been testing well and groundwater in the area to gauge the extent of the contamination and to consider solutions. The center of the affected area is where Creek Road intersects Mearns Road, near the Neshaminy Valley Golf Club. The DEP said Tuesday night that eight homes have TCE levels above safe drinking standards of five parts per billion, 40 homes have some level of contamination or risk, six businesses are above safe drinking levels and negligible levels were found in the Neshaminy Creek tributary that runs through the area. Sampling also found elevated levels of a chemical called 1,1-dichloroethene in several wells. … For the entire article, see http://www.theintell.com/news/local/residents-pleased-with-dep-solution-to-well-water-contamination/article_3e65c52e-8da8-11e5-bc5f-fbef9208c23d.html -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
