Whirlpool Releases Quarterly Fort Smith Cleanup Report By Chad Hunter Times Record (AR) November 19, 2015 The latest report on cleanup efforts at the former Whirlpool plant in Fort Smith describes the site as having “generally stable to decreasing trends” of toxic contamination from July through the end of September. A portion of Whirlpool Corp.’s sprawling property on Jenny Lind Road has been contaminated with trichloroethylene, or TCE, since at least 1989 when it was discovered in groundwater, according to Whirlpool’s environmental consulting firm, Environ. The toxic chemical was later discovered underneath a nearby neighborhood. TCE was used at the plant as a degreasing agent between the late 1960s and early 1980s before it was found to be harmful, according to Whirlpool.
