Toxic vapors again problematic near CTS Superfund site by Tonya Maxwell Asheville Citizen-Times (NC) November 27, 2015 Problems with a year-old piping system to treat toxic vapors near a Superfund site indicate a larger cleanup needs to take place, an engineer with the Environmental Protection Agency said this week as a deadline nears on a cleanup decision for the source of the pollution. Located near the CTS of Asheville site on Mills Gap Road, the system underwent standard air testing two weeks ago, and officials found toxic vapors were escaping at concerning levels. The contractor for CTS has performed upgrades on the apparatus and further testing is expected. The PVC pipes sit on the property of the Rice family, atop a wetland area fed by natural springs that bring groundwater laced with the carcinogenic chemical trichloroethylene, better known as TCE, to the surface.
