Cohoes chosen for state brownfields program

COHOES - A decade-long effort to address abandoned and environmentally contaminated sites in and around the city’s Interstate 787 corridor was among 11 such programs across New York state selected Monday for help through a state program.

More than 400 acres are included in a Brownfield Opportunity Area that will be eligible for grants and other assistance to develop ideas to revitalize more than 180 properties identified as either brownfields or underutilized sites.

Cohoes received a $225,000 grant to finance its study of the Cohoes Boulevard area, in which officials expressed hope of redeveloping properties to build on the city’s historic downtown and its waterfronts along the Mohawk and Hudson rivers. The designation will give priority status to the study area for other grant opportunities, as well as allow developers to take advantage of tax breaks and other financial incentives.
