Elkhart Habitat for Humanity still waiting to build houses on contaminated property by Ben Quibble Elkhart Truth (IN) February 17, 2016 ELKHART - Years have gone by since Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County, Inc., offered to build homes on a contaminated industrial site located on Elkhart’s near north side, but just when the required cleanup might occur remains unknown. Two years ago, Habitat for Humanity paid $25,000 to tear down an old building at the former site of the Bergerson Screw machine shop that now sits empty at 1032 E. Beardsley Ave. with hopes of building four new homes for families. With its close proximity to Beardsley Elementary, grocery stores and parks, the site is ideal for Habitat for Humanity families.
