Saving healthy property from old brownfields

Communities across the nation and locally may soon get help in revitalizing brownfields for future economic development opportunities.

U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, R-19, introduced the Brownfields Reauthorization Act of 2016 with U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-5, of Connecticut, at the beginning of the month.

The new bill would improve the Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields Program and help communities redevelop its own brownfields through assessment and remediation.
The EPA’s definition of a brownfield is “real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.”

“Visiting old industrial sites like the former Beech-Nut packing plant in Canajoharie, a facility that occupies valuable waterfront property in the heart of the village prompted me to introduce this bill last month,” Gibson said.
