Cleanup of Evans-Fintube industrial site just north of downtown Tulsa to begin soon

A long-awaited effort to clean up the Evans-Fintube industrial site just north of downtown Tulsa will begin soon, opening doors to developing the “brownfield” property and revitalizing parts of north Tulsa, city officials told residents Monday.

Clay Bird, director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, said about $600,000 in federal grant money will pay for rectifying some of the environmental problems at one of the city’s oldest industrial sites.

The Evans-Fintube property was used as a steel foundry and forge from 1939 through 1962 and potentially has hydrocarbon and metal contamination of surface soils, according to the Tulsa Development Authority’s Brownfield Grant application. The property later was used to produce heat exchangers and had a concrete reservoir, a forge, and welding and fabrication shops, the application says.
