Pompton Lakes residents say $43M sediment cleanup is not enough BY JAMES M. O’NEILL THE RECORD (NJ) March 12, 2016 A much-delayed major project to dredge mercury-laced sediment from Pompton Lake will finally begin this spring, but some residents still have deep misgivings about the plan, arguing that the federal government should have pushed for a more thorough cleanup. The removal of the lake’s contaminated sediment was delayed for several years as the federal Environmental Protection Agency and DuPont, which caused the pollution, clashed over how much sediment the company should remove. The $43 million plan calls for more than 130,000 cubic yards of muck to be dredged — 10,600 dump trucks’ worth. That’s more than originally proposed, but some residents believe a larger swath of the lake should be cleared. … For the entire article, see http://www.northjersey.com/news/pompton-lakes-residents-say-43m-sediment-cleanup-is-not-enough-1.1526987?fb_action_ids=10205618902856100&fb_action_types=og.comments -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
