Mississippi Town Faces Dangers of Toxic Spill

WATER VALLEY - Water Valley residents should see low levels of a toxic chemical from an old carburetor plant cleaned up within a decade, Mississippi environmental officials said during a public hearing Tuesday.

But some residents sounded less worried about the health effects from the chemical linked to cancer than the effect on their property values.

William McKercher, remedial manager for the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality’s project, said the agency's vapor tests revealed low levels of trichloroethylene (TCE), a degreasing solvent used for decades at the old carburetor plant run by Holley Performance Products.

On Tuesday, officials showed a map of the area where the toxic plume settled between the plant, now operated by BorgWarner, and Otoucalofa Creek.
