EPA proposes to add Riverside site to Superfund list
Groundwater contamination in Valley Pike neighborhood traced to manufacturer

RIVERSIDE — Contaminated groundwater in the city’s Valley Pike neighborhood could become a Superfund cleanup site.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday announced that it is proposing to add the site to the national priorities list of Superfund sites to receive funding through the federal program to investigate and clean up the most complex hazardous waste sites in the country. EPA representatives, who met with affected residents last month, said they would recommend the site for the federal program.

The contamination was traced to Mullins Rubber Products and Mullins Land Co, and has been under investigation since 2010. Last month, EPA representatives said the agency in January reached an agreement with the company to pay for certain response costs. EPA testing in 2013 confirmed the groundwater contained PCE, or perchloroethylene, and TCE, or trichloroethylene; PCE is considered a likely carcinogen and TCE is a known carcinogen. Fumes from both are showing up under the slabs of homes.
