Proactive initiative Wilkes Journal-Patriot (NC) June 8, 2016 The Town of North Wilkesboro is moving ahead with efforts to identify and cleanup “brownfields,” which the Environmental Protection Agency defines as a former industrial or commercial site with real or perceived environmental contamination that impacts the property’s future use. These sites can include everything from property where gas storage tanks once were buried to old industrial sites. Portions of the old C.C. Smoot & Sons Tannery property are an example of potential brownfield sites in North Wtilkesboro. Tuesday night, the North Wilkesboro commissioners approved an agreement employing Mid-Atlantic Associates Inc., an engineering firm in Raleigh, to help the town apply for EPA grants to fund the identification of brownfield sites in the town.
