PFOA found in groundwater near former Salem landfill

SALEM - About 50 neighbors were notified over the past couple of days that groundwater contamination has been detected at a nearby former landfill - the latest in a series of discoveries across the state of excessive perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA.

Nine of 10 monitoring wells at the former LL&S Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill on Lowell Road showed levels of PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonate, or PFOS, that exceeded the state safety threshold of 70 parts per trillion, the state announced. Two of those wells showed combined levels surpassing 400 ppt.

The Department of Environmental Services is offering free well testing to any of the notified residents.
