Related's CityPlace Santa Clara heads in for final approval Here's what you need to know about $6.5 billion megaproject and remaining challenges by Nathan Donato-Weinstein Silicon Valley Business Journal (CA) June 27, 2016 Almost exactly three years ago, Santa Clara disclosed a humdinger of a development idea: Leasing a closed city landfill just north of Levi’s Stadium to the Related Companies for a veritable new downtown that would include more than 9 million square feet of new construction. Fast forward, and that unlikely vision for Silicon Valley’s largest-ever private development project is headed for a milestone: City Council approval. On Tuesday, the council will consider signing off on thousands of pages of documents, including an environmental impact report, lease and development agreement and zoning changes. A green light paves the way for Related to start construction on the project’s first phase as early as the fall of 2017. … At the same time, regulators have not yet signed off on key elements of Related’s unique building design, which involves building an enormous platform over the landfill and driving piles deep into the ground.
