Preston nears brownfield remediation at Norwich Hospital site

PRESTON – The Preston Redevelopment Agency is just about set to begin brownfield remediation at the old Norwich State Hospital site as negotiations around the sale of the property to the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority continue.

The town has been eyeing such a project since it received a $165,000 grant from the state in 2015 to assess the area and develop a cleanup plan.

“We can start with abatement and demo, which we already have the prices on,” Redevelopment Agency member Jim Bell said. “We even have a little bit of money left, $5,520 on good old grant 11.”

Once the brownfield cleanup and sale of the property are finalized, the Mohegan Tribe plans to develop a non-gaming extension of the Mohegan Sun Casino, according to the Redevelopment Agency website. The new complex would likely include shopping outlets and a golf course, among other commercial ventures.
