Chlorinated solvents found in wells south of Salem by Tracy Loew Salem Statesman Journal (OR) August 9, 2016 The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is racing to test about 50 private wells in the Green Hills East area south of Salem after finding dangerous levels of chlorinated solvents in some samples. In early June, a homeowner in the area commissioned a test after noticing a sickly sweet taste in the water and finding black material on the well filter, DEQ spokeswoman Katherine Benenati said. The homeowner’s plumber notified DEQ and on July 21 DEQ tested nine wells in the area.
