EPA Warns of Potential Hazard at Old Sporlan Site

A standing-room-only crowd at city hall reacted with anger, confusion and a lot of questions over news of a potential hazardous substance site in Washington.

Tuesday night the Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 hosted a meeting in Washington to inform residents near the former Sporlan Valve site about the possible problems related to contaminated soil and groundwater.

Heath Smith, federal on-site coordinator with the EPA, said no problems have been found so far in the Washington homes, but air tests have reached an action level for the EPA.

Tuesday’s meeting was designed to inform the residents about the potential dangers and what steps need to be taken. A team of experts from the EPA, the CDC and the state of Missouri were on hand to field
