Economic ghost town in Endicott hopes for business move-ins by Jeff Platsky Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) October 18, 2016 When Joe Titti strolled Endicott’s Washington Avenue in the ‘70s and ‘80s he could buy everything from jewelry for his wife, to stocks for his investment portfolio to baked goods for the dinner table. Men stood in line at local investment adviser Cheevers, Hand & Angeline waiting to check the stock quote machine during their lunch hour. The avenue’s four-block length was packed with IBM Corp. workers shopping at Burt’s department store or buying fresh white shirts — de rigueur for IBM professionals — at one of two men’s haberdasheries. Restaurants did brisk eat-in and takeout business. “It was a virtual mall,” recalled Titti, 77, an Endicott resident who worked for IBM from 1959 until 1992. “There was everything you needed.” That was then.
