Ballot question 6: $35M Green Economy Bond would clean up brownfields, create bike paths, parks by Alex Kuffner Providence Journal (RI) October 23, 2016 PROVIDENCE - Tucked into a quiet corner of Olneyville, Riverside Park has a colorful playground, a community bike shop and a canoe launch, a vegetable garden and picnic tables, an outdoor classroom near a fish ladder, and stations where children can learn about local plants and animals. "Believe in Nature," reads a sign that greets visitors. It wasn’t that long ago that this nine-acre sliver of land between the Woonasquatucket River and Aleppo Street was a derelict industrial site polluted with oil and littered with the crumbling remnants of a dozen 19th-century mill buildings that burned down in a string of fires between 1989 and 2001. With the help of city, state and federal funding, debris and contaminated soil were removed, the land was capped, and development of the park followed. ...
