Massive cleanup costs at former Belchertown State School force officials to seek EPA Brownfields designation for additional funding By Jim Russell Springfield Republican (MA) November 30, 2016 BELCHERTOWN -- When the town purchased 259 acres and numerous buildings belonging to the former Belchertown State School for $10 in 1992, it also bought a toxic mess. Significant strides have been made the past three years to clean up the massive amounts of pollution, including a $4.6 million effort funded by the state. But a "prohibitive" amount of money would be needed to fully remediate the land and safely remove dozens of abandoned buildings, according to an application from the town to the federal Environmental Protection Agency seeking to designate the area as a Brownfields site. ...
