EPA: Grenada workers exposed to high levels of toxins

Hundreds of workers at a Grenada manufacturing facility in the northern Mississippi town are likely breathing toxic air throughout their normal workday.

A new study the Environmental Protection Agency released Friday shows the cancer-causing vapor exists inside the facility at rates exceeding the federal action level, the highest threshold designated by the agency.

"Those levels are outrageous, and it shows the callous disregard those companies that operated the plant had for those workers," said Ted Lyons, the attorney representing nearby residents who have sued the companies that previously operated the plant.

"These results indicate that TCE may be entering the facility in the form of a gas from contaminated groundwater and soil beneath the building, a process known as 'vapor intrusion.' Groundwater sampling conducted over the past three decades show that there is contaminated groundwater underneath the facility property," the EPA letter reads.
