New wells to track movement of underground TCE in Andrews

Additional testing wells are being drilled in Andrews to monitor the underground movement of a contaminant once used by a now-closed industry, members of the Andrews Town Council announced during their meeting on Monday, March 27.
The 10 new wells, prompted by the discovery of vapors from the contaminant in the basement of the Andrews Municipal Building, will join more than 100 testing wells already in place.
But council members are irritated by the lack of information provided to them by Stantec Consulting, the environmental service company tracking the plume of trichloroethylene (TCE), an industrial solvent once used at the United Technologies Automotive plant. TCE has been classified as carcinogenic to humans by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
