DEC prepares site cleanup of New Hartford metals plant

NEW HARTFORD - The state Department of Environmental Conservation will consider the available options for cleaning up a 42-acre brownfield site at a metals manufacturing facility.

The DEC recently completed its investigation of the site at the Special Metals Corp. facility on Middle Settlement Road.

The site is part of a greater property that’s owned by Special Metals. Located within the brownfield site’s boundaries are the company’s main plant, rolling plant and pilot plant.

The DEC, however, investigation found elevated concentrations of soil contamination in the form of volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls and metals.
