Beneath several properties in Chemung and Steuben counties lingers contaminated soil from former manufacturing operations and chemical leaks.

Brownfields - properties where contaminants exceed health-based or environmental standards — dot the landscape of an area long supported by manufacturing operations, leaving the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to examine the remnants.

In early May, the DEC announced a public meeting for interim remedial measures at a portion of the Elmira High School property, which sits on top of a former manufacturing site - the latest in a string of DEC announcements about contaminated properties in the area.
