Brownfields dot Southern Tier landscape by Amanda Renko Elmira Star-Gazette (NY) May 12, 2017 Beneath several properties in Chemung and Steuben counties lingers contaminated soil from former manufacturing operations and chemical leaks. Brownfields - properties where contaminants exceed health-based or environmental standards — dot the landscape of an area long supported by manufacturing operations, leaving the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to examine the remnants.
