Pensacola's Community Maritime Park receives $200K EPA grant by Derek Cosson Pulse Gulf Coast (FL) May 31, 2017 The City of Pensacola will receive a $200,000 brownfields cleanup grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to remove creosote pilings at the waterfront Community Maritime Park. Pensacola was one of five communities in Florida to receive a grant under the brownfields program and one of 172 communities nationwide. Before being purchased by the city in 2000, the park property historically served as a railroad freight terminal, with a commercial pier extending from the bulkhead. Erected in the early 1900s, the Frisco Docks were completely destroyed in a 1966 fire, but more than 500 creosote-treated pilings remain submerged underwater. Contamination from polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, is also present. … For the entire article, see http://pulsegulfcoast.com/2017/05/pensacolas-community-maritime-park-receives-200k-epa-grant -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center P.O.
