Niles energy plant construction pushed to end of year By Mary Beth Spalding South Bend Tribune (IN) July 28, 2017 NILES — Construction of a $1 billion natural gas power plant in the Niles industrial park that was set to start in August has been pushed back to possibly December. Financing and brownfield matters have slowed the proposed project a bit, according to Niles City Administrator Ric Huff. Indeck Energy Services, which has proposed building the plant, has been pursuing a tax abatement and writing a brownfield remediation plan to move the project along, Huff said. Niles City Council on Monday approved a 13-year, $6.7 million personal property tax exemption requested by Indeck for the plant. Huff said the abatement was necessary for Indeck to secure financing for the project.
