Another toxic sludge site - this one with a cleanup plan

What’s the viscous orange goo poking through the weeds on the land southwest of Ortiz Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard?

It’s arsenic-laced sludge, a by-product of the drinking water treatment process, dumped on the city of Fort Myers’ shallow aquifer wellfield.

The same waste The News-Press reported dumped by the city in a historically African American neighborhood of Dunbar from 1962 into the 1970s, and possibly beyond.

The wellfield has been a designated brownfield since 2003 – a contaminated site that can qualify for grants to clean it up and return it to use – while over the same period, its sister site at Henderson Avenue and South Street was moth-balled by city leaders and state officials who knew it could be unsafe, until reported in The News-Press.
