New cleanup plan for toxins in Tipton

TIPTON, Ind. (WTHR) - An Indiana mayor credits Eyewitness News for getting the ball rolling on a clean up of cancer-causing toxins near a city well.

13 Investigates first exposed the problem in Tipton in June 2016 as part of an investigative series titled "Dangerous Exposure."

Now there's a new plan to get rid of the decades old contamination.

But after 10 years of "(failing) to substantially comply with the terms of remediation" IDEM kicked the company out of the VRP. That's when the state should have taken enforcement action. 

But IDEM dropped the ball and did nothing for four more years, until 13 Investigates exposed the lapse in compliance to both Mayor Havens and to IDEM.
