State denies $15M funding request for Bridge Street project

GREAT BARRINGTON - While state funding was recently denied for an affordable housing complex planned for a Bridge Street brownfield, the possibility of an assisted living facility on another part of the eight-acre site is raising hopes for the project's owner.

The Department of Housing and Community Development recently rejected a roughly $15 million request by the Community Development Corporation of Southern Berkshire for a 45-unit project, according to CDC Executive Director Timothy Geller.

And because the cleanup of toxic chemicals on the site is tied to the affordable housing construction, groundbreaking there will depend entirely on when the state money comes in, Geller added.
