Knox Laundry site needs deep cleaning By Rebecca Susmarski Galesburg Register-Mail (IL) March 10, 2018 GALESBURG - A brownfield in the middle of downtown Galesburg will remain an unoccupied piece of ground unless a local municipality, private entity or individual decides to make a change. The three-parcel brownfield located at 332 E. Ferris St. and 57 N. Kellogg St. - site of the former Knox Laundry - came under the control of Knox County Trustee in 2008 and 2009. The Knox County Trustee is the Knox County Board, but Whitney Strohmeyer, president of Joseph E. Meyer & Associates, performs trustee duties for the county by purchasing any parcels of land that are not bid on at the county’s annual real estate tax sale. The brownfield was placed up for auction at a $600 minimum bid in 2009 and 2014, but there were no takers. Strohmeyer said that’s most likely because anyone who buys the property also would need to pay to remediate contaminants on the property leftover from the laundry business — a total cost of $165,000. … For the entire article, see http://www.galesburg.com/news/20180310/knox-laundry-site-needs-deep-cleaning -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center P.O.
